Description

Mediator, psychologist and trainer, Barbara Miller has an innovative business called Mediation Works Qld which not only assists people and organisations to resolve disputes but goes beyond that to conflict coaching.

“We empower people to develop characteristics and skills that reduce and resolve conflict and still have their needs met” said Mrs Miller. “Rather than just facilitating the resolution of the present dispute, we aim to build capacity in people and organisations to equip them to prevent where possible, reduce and better manage conflict in the future”.

“Relationship breakup is difficult enough without the stress of working out how to share time with your children and how to split up property. Emotions often run high and it is difficult for separated parents to talk about it amicably” said Mrs Miller.

Mediation Works Qld assists separated parents to negotiate a parenting plan and property settlement with each other. It is tailored to their needs as a family, is in the best interests of the children and is practical, workable and fair.

The Family Law Act requires separated parents to attempt mediation before going to court on parenting matters. Barbara is a registered family dispute resolution practitioner so when disputes are not settled or one party refuses to mediate or mediation is not appropriate, she is able to provide certificates under the Act that enable them to go to court. There are some cases that are not suitable for mediation e.g. where there are safety risks in families.

Mediation is different from a court in that in that mediators do not hand down a judgement or tell people what to do or take sides. Instead they sit down with the parties for a 3-4 hour confidential session and facilitate discussion and assist them to negotiate following an agenda tailored to their particular needs. It can be a very empowering process.

Often when people separate, they are faced with conflict and do not have the skills to approach the different landscape of co-parenting in a positive manner. So a default position can be taken simply because people do not have the knowledge or skill set to approach the concerns in another way. Mediation can provide that way.

As long as there is not a conflict of interest, counselling is provided as an additional service where required, with Medicare rebates being available. Again, the goal is to strengthen relationships by providing counselling for those who want to save their relationships before it is too late and post-separation counselling to assist separated parents to successfully co-parent their children.

Mediation Works Qld provides corporate and other clients with mediation for workplace disputes and HR grievances, body corporate and tenancy disputes, consumer disputes, disputes re wills and estates and neighbourhood disputes. Barbara facilitates difficult AGMs and meetings; provides conflict coaching and a range of training for organisations, individuals and families.

Barbara is a member of LEADR which is a professional organization for mediators and has worked for the Cairns Family Relationship Centre as a family dispute resolution practitioner.

Barbara has been a mediator on the panel of the Dispute Resolution Branch of the Qld Department of Justice and Attorney-General since the early 90’s and brings extensive experience in a wide range of mediations, both with corporate and individual clients. She is also a psychologist with national registration. She is an accredited trainer (TAA 40104) with many years training experience. She has been involved in indigenous affairs for over 30 years. She is a previous member of the Australian Institute of Management and has broad management and business experience.

Miller facilitates the resolution of disputes in families, the workplace, business, government, indigenous affairs etc and promotes better relationships and ways of approaching conflict between and within organisations. She brings over 20 years experience to the mediation field.

Mediation Works Qld provides value-added mediation, education and counselling services that equip individuals and organisations not only to resolve their present conflict but to become a confident person or organisation that handles conflict well and gains negotiating skills.
